In our society we are seeing what has been referred to as an epidemic of stress and anxiety. We are living in a fast paced and highly stressful society. At the same time as we are seeing an increase in stress and the pace of life we are also finding it increasingly difficult to relax, unplug or shut things off. Chronic stress and stressful situations can trigger stress hormones that produce physiological changes such as increased heart rate, quickened, shallow breathing and muscles tensing. This combination of reactions to stress is known as the “fight-or-flight” response – our survival instinct (also called hyperarousal, or the acute stress response) This survival instinct is meant to protect us from danger and predators. In present society it is being triggered by stress. Research indicates that chronic stress contribute to a number of health conditions and causes brain changes that may contribute to anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Counselling can be beneficial to learn strategies to manage stress and learn coping strategies and techniques to counter the stress response, including: relaxation techniques, mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy.
